Have a fabulous break

Both students and staff at Leeds Beckett are gearing up to the forthcoming vacation, and whether you celebrate Christmas or not, everyone needs to recharge their batteries once in a while.

Some of you may be planning to spend part of the vacation in catching up on your studies and that’s great as, once any festivities are over, lots of people find that they can study at a slightly more relaxed pace, rather than juggling studies with things like work and school pickups.IMG_07041

If you need any more resources before the vacation, the Offsite team (like Santa’s elves) will be beavering away to get your requested items out as soon as possible. You can either request items by placing them on hold via the Library Catalogue, or you can email us direct at offsite@leedsbeckett.ac.uk . If you have any specific queries about your requests it would probably be better to email or ring us.

Due to Royal Mail pickup times, the last day that the Offsite team can post books out will be Wednesday 23rd December. Because of the Bank Holidays, items sent out that day are likely to be delivered on, or after, Tuesday 29th December. If we usually deliver to a work address and you’d like us to send your items to an alternative address, that’s fine, just let us know.

If you’re planning on visiting the Library in person over the vacation, please remember to bring your campus card (student card) with you, so that you can use the self-service machines in the Library if necessary. You’ll also need to know your Library PIN and you can find this on My Beckett – under the Library tab, at the section called Manage your Library account.

The Library (including Offsite) is staffed until 12.30 on Christmas Eve, Thursday 24th December, and staff will return on Monday 4th January. If you have any queries over the holiday, please do contact us and we will get back to you as soon as possible in the new year.

We hope you all have a peaceful, happy and relaxing break. See you in 2016!

Visiting us over Christmas and using other libraries

Some of you may be thinking about visiting us or visiting other libraries closer to home over the Christmas period. Our library is open 24/7 throughout the festive season, see the library website for more information and also details of when staff will be available to help if you need us. The majority of university libraries in the UK and Ireland belong to a reciprocal borrowing scheme called SCONUL Access. This enables students to access university libraries nearer to their home. You can apply online, see this short video guide on how to apply for SCONUL Access. Your application will be processed in the Library and an authorisation email sent to you. Take the email along with your Leeds Beckett student card, to the university library you wish to access (if you haven’t been sent your student card yet please contact your course administrator). Click here for more information on using other libraries. Do not hesitate to get in touch with your friendly Offsite team if you have any questions about this.

Skills for Learning

We understand that many distance learners are also working alongside their studies and finding time to study can sometimes be a challenge. Our Skills for Learning team have created a really useful assignment calculator to help you manage your time. Their website is also worth a look as it features a variety of resources on the use of IT, numeracy, academic literacy, problem solving, critical thinking, working with others and research skills. They have also created a series of podcasts that explore a variety of topics including essay writing, plagiarism and statistics. Don’t forget that it is never too late to contact Offsite if you do need any help with anything.
